Oil Filter - construction and operation

Always replacing the oil filter with oil, from the user perspective this is not importance. It is a part, of which in principle does not think, but very important. As usual, a little thing plays a very important role. It is worth to know its construction and operation to pass realized it.

Engine oil is in the oil sump, which is its reservoir. Induct by the so-called. Strainer, goes to the first of filters. It is a stainer placed on the strainer, which separates the dirty oil from the larger pollutions. Dirty oil - yes, you can still call it that - goes further into the oil filter. Here is no more jokes and after passing through the filter, the oil must be clean to fulfill its function. The oil filter is designed to remove impurities of the size 1/50 of a millimeter. If he doesn't do it even the smallest particles of sand can damage the engine. Of course, not immediately, but repeated several times in this way, the process strongly affects the life of the engine. This applies not only sand but also seemingly harmless soft and harmless as synthetic fibers and plastics.

The most common oil filter is a small, metal box in which little happens. Hence the name filter canned - that we will see about it Inside there is the paper filter cartridge  resistant to oil (dissolution) at the same time transmitting it through its surface. Generally, his appearance resembles the air filter is arranged in a zigzag pattern, all in order to increase the working surface. To all intents and purposes, it works similarly. Inside the cartridge is pressure relif valve. What does it do?

Now, to the filter oil is forced through small holes in its lid, and after passing through the filter cartridge, a filtered engine oil out of the filter through a large hole in the center. Oil to the
filter flows under high pressure of about 5 bar. This is not a problem for filter cartridge if the oil has a suitable body and is warm, and the cartridge itself is fairly clean. However, when the cartridge is already dirty, or oil is cold and thick, it is not always able to pass through the paper element. If not resolved this issue, sometimes a cold engine would not get the right amount of oil, and this could lead to tear the filter - as sometimes happens in poor quality filters. The solution to this is a valve which opens at a high pressure flow of unfiltered oil. It happens rarely, but this fact can realize how important it is appropriate filter quality, the selection for the properties pressure valve and proper oil viscosity. In many engines currently used filter fixedly on the engine, and  only the filter cartridge is replaced - in some sense eliminates the problem of properly selecting the oil filter and its parameters.

In canned filters  may be other valves. An important, but not always used is a check valve provided at the filter cover. Its role is to close the flow of oil through the filler holes. This is important because the immobilization engine oil remains in the can and does not flow back into the sump. When restarting the engine, the first dose of oil from its interior goes directly to the components requiring lubrication. Such valves are used, but only in the filters that are mounted in the engine cover to the bottom or side of the engine block in a horizontal position.

Similar to the check valve is so-called ECO valve. It performs exactly the same function, but prevents spillage form filter clean oil  (the big hole in the middle). This allows further speed up the reaching of the first dose of oil (already filtered) to the engine, preventing the so-called dry start. So why it is called EKO? Now, one of the advantages of this valve is that when changing the oil filter does not spill out of it.

Understanding the simple principle of operation of the filter and placed in it the valve allows to realize that it is not irrelevant. I am skipping his regular exchanges, but the wrong choice of the filter, or filter poor quality has an impact on lubrication of engine.

A very important and underrated element that is included with the oil filter gasket. When replacing the filter, use a new, lubricate before mounting the surface oil, which ensures tightness of the connection until the next oil change.
